Any Given Saturday was entered in the Sept. 22 Brooklyn Handicap (gr. II) with a simple plan in mind: to get another one-turn race under his belt as a prep for the Oct. 27 Breeders’ Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I) at Monmouth Park.

The colt more than fulfilled the hopes of trainer Todd Pletcher when he captured the 11¼8-mile race by 21¼2 lengths.

It was the third consecutive score for Any Given Saturday, who finished unplaced in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), but went on to capture the July 4 Dwyer Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont and the Aug. 5 Haskell Invitational (gr. I) at Monmouth prior to the Brooklyn.

The 3-year-old Distorted Humor colt, owned by Bill Casner and Kenny Troutt’s WinStar Farm and Satish and Anne Sanan’s Padua Stables, now has five weeks to finish preparing for Breeders’ Cup day.

“He’s proved he likes it down there (at Monmouth Park) and hopefully, he’ll run the same kind of race (in the Breeders’ Cup Classic as he did in the Haskell Invitational),” said winning jockey Garrett Gomez.

Bred by Racehorse Management, a Midway, Ky.-based division of WinStar, Any Given Saturday was listed as sold for $1.1 million to Buzz Chace, agent, at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Since winning the Brooklyn, the dark bay/brown colt has nearly paid back his auction price with earnings of $1,083,533.

Any Given Saturday is out of the winning A.P. Indy mare Weekend in Indy, who was bought for $290,000 by Troutt’s wife, Lisa, at the 2000 Keeneland November mixed sale. In foal to Carson City, she was consigned by Lane’s End, agent.

A half-sister to grade III winner Second of June (by Louis Quatorze), Weekend in Indy is a daughter of the stakes-winning Spectacular Bid mare Whow.

Weekend in Indy’s first foal, Bohemian Lady, won the 2004 Cicada Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct and boasts earnings of $423,231. The 6-year-old Carson City mare is also owned by Padua and was trained by Pletcher.

Kept at WinStar near Versailles, Ky., Weekend in Indy has a yearling full sister to Any Given Saturday. Weekend in Indy’s 2007 foal by Distorted Humor died; however, she is back in foal to that stallion.

Distorted Humor is the sire of 59 stakes winners, including other 2007 graded or group winners Hystericalady (gr. I), Don Dandy (PR-I), Joker Mine (Mal-I), Cowtown Cat (gr. II), Fourty Niners Son (gr. IIT), Like It Is (Aust-II), The Nth Degree (gr. IIIT), and Bit of Whimsy (gr. IIIT). Distorted Humor stood the 2007 season for $225,000 at WinStar. —E.M.
