ItÕs a Bird made his move around the far turn at Calder Race Course and held on to take the Oct. 18 Spend a Buck Handicap (gr. III) by a head. It was his third consecutive win at Calder under trainer Marty Wolfson. ÒHe was entered in the turf race (Miami Mile), too,Ó Wolfson said. ÒAnd had it come off the turf and he ran in there, he would have won by 20 (lengths). I knew he would beat Gottcha Gold in this race.Ó ItÕs a Bird was sent to WolfsonÕs barn at the end of the summer. Since then, he won an optional claiming race and took his first stakes race, the Sept. 20 Plagiarize Stakes, both at Calder. Prior to this, the son of Birdonthewire had won five other races. Edmund Gann has owned ItÕs a Bird since 2006 when he bought the horse privately from the breeder, White Cross Farm. Gann, who is involved in the tuna industry, has owned multiple graded stakes winners including Medaglia dÕOro, Midas Eyes, Peace Rules, and You. Bred in Florida, ItÕs a Bird is out of Faithful City (by Hooched). Faithful City took the 1996 Suncoast Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs before becoming a broodmare. Her dam, the Red Ryder mare Prissy Gold Digger, was also a winner. Eight of Prissy Gold DiggerÕs nine foals were winners. Her other stakes-winning foals were Gold I. D. (by Caller I. D.), and Say How You Feel (by Little Current). Hot Affair (by Silent Tempest) was stakes-placed. Say How You Feel also went on to produce the stakes-winning HowÕs Your Halo (by HaloÕs Image). Faithful City, who was campaigned by White Cross Farm, has produced nine foals. All six of her starters are winners. Her most recent foal is a yearling colt by ConcordeÕs Tune named Road to Babylon, who was also bred by White Cross Farm. Birdonthewire is the sire of nine stakes winners. ItÕs a Bird is BirdonthewireÕs only 2008 added-money winner. The son of Proud Birdie stood the 2008 season at Madera Thoroughbreds in California for a fee of $3,500.ÑK.B |
