Displaying some of the same qualities as the seemingly unstoppable and multiple champion Cigar, for whom the grade I Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile was named, Discreet Cat remained unbeaten in this year’s running of that race, contested at Aqueduct Nov. 25.
Carrying 124 pounds and prevailing by an easy 31/4 lengths against older horses, 3-year-old Discreet Cat completed the last New York grade I race of 2006 in 1:32.46. When translated to fifths of a second, the son of Forestry equaled Easy Goer’s record mile of 1:322/5 at Aqueduct in 1989.
With six victories in as many starts and earnings of $1,554,180, Discreet Cat’s trainer Saeed bin Suroor said the colt will spend some time in Florida before heading back to Dubai, where his 2007 campaign will be planned.
“It was a good trip from Hollywood (Park) to (Aqueduct) to win two grade I (races),” said Suroor, who saw Discreet Cat’s jockey Garrett Gomez also guide Ashkal Way to victory in the Nov. 24 Citation Handicap. Suroor added that Discreet Cat would now be considered for next year’s Dubai World Cup (UAE-I).
Carrying the colors of the Maktoum family’s Godolphin Racing, Discreet Cat was bred in Kentucky by the late E. Paul Robsham. In addition to Discreet Cat and Ashkal Way, Godolphin is represented by 2006 European group winners Caralak, Librettist, and Echo of Light.
Discreet Cat is out of the graded stakes-winning Private Account mare Pretty Discreet, who scored her big win in the 1995 Alabama Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga as a homebred for Robsham. At 2, she had on-the-board efforts in the Matron and Frizette Stakes (both gr. I).
Fortunately, the success of Pretty Discreet did not end with her racing career. In addition to Discreet Cat, she is the dam of stakes producer Pretty Boundary (by Boundary) and stakes winner Pretty Wild (by Wild Again).
Kept at Hidden Brook near Paris, Ky., Pretty Discreet has a yearling colt, Discreet Treasure (by El Prado), and foaled a filly named Discreet Empire (by Empire Maker) March 24. The 14-year-old mare, owned by Robsham’s widow, Joyce, is in foal to Mineshaft.
Forestry is the sire of 24 stakes winners, including 2006 graded added-money winners Diplomat Lady (gr. II), Smokey Glacken (gr. II), and Old Forester (gr. IIIT). Forestry stands at the Taylor family’s Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky. His 2007 fee is $125,000.—E.M.
