Diabolical didn’t miss the track record by much in the Gallant Bob Handicap Oct. 7 at Philadelphia Park. The 3-year-old colt’s time of 1:08.40 for the six furlongs compared favorably to the track record of 1:07.89.

Diabolical, who has won three stakes this year, was bred in Kentucky by Shirley N. (Cosy) Lathrop’s Longleaf Pine Farm. Lathrop, whose farm is located near Southern Pines, N.C., boards her horses at Michael Barnett’s Blackburn Farm near Midway, Ky.

Barnett, who assists Lathrop in bloodstock matters, bought Diabolical’s dam, Bonnie Byerly, for Lathrop for $330,000 at the 2001 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. Consigned by Fred Seitz, agent for Oldenburg Farm, Bonnie Byerly was in foal to Pulpit.

Acting as agent for Longleaf, Barnett consigned Diabolical to the 2004 Keeneland September yearling sale, where W.D. North, agent, bought the colt for $62,000. The following year, North as agent sold Diabolical to trainer Steve Klesaris, agent for Jeff Puglisi, for $300,000 at the 2005 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s February sale of 2-year-olds in training.

Diabolical, who is owned by Puglisi Stables and Klesaris, is one of three 2006 stakes winners campaigned by the two parties. Miraculous Miss has won three graded stakes this year, including the Comely (gr. II) and Forward Gal (gr. II) Stakes, and Master of Disaster has a pair of stakes wins to his credit.

Longleaf Pine is represented as breeder by additional stakes winners Friendofthefamily and G. W.’s Deputy this decade. The latter was bred in partnership with Barnett.

Bonnie Byerly produced a Maria’s Mon filly this year. She is not in foal.

Artax, sire of the Gallant Bob winner, has sired four stakes winners, including additional 2006 added-money winner Gimme Credit. Artax stands at Metropolitan Stud near Pine Plains, N.Y. His 2006 fee was $10,000.—D.S.
