(gr. III , 7f , to Le Grand Cru, Past the Point, defeating Cherokee Country, Lucky Island (ARG) ).
Le Grand Cru has gotten his act together in a big way this fall. After winning just two of his first 11 starts, he has captured his last two racesÑthe Oct. 4 Kelso Handicap (gr. III) at Belmont Park and the Oct. 31 Bold Ruler Handicap (gr. III) at Aqueduct.
Owned by Judson Streicher, Le Grand Cru won the Bold Ruler by a half-length over Past the Point. His time in the seven-furlong race was 1:22.19.
The victory was the fourth in the Bold Ruler for trainer H. Allen Jerkens. The Hall of Fame conditioner won the 1995 running with Rizzi and the 1998-99 runnings with Kelly Kip.
Jerkens might run 4-year-old Le Grand Cru next in the Nov. 28 Hill ÔnÕ Dale Cigar Mile Handicap (gr. I) at Aqueduct.
Bred in Kentucky by Earle I. Mack, Le Grand Cru was consigned by Denali Stud, agent, to the 2006 Keeneland September yearling sale. Selling during the third session, Le Grand Cru, a son of Dynaformer, was purchased by Streicher Stables for $230,000. Le Grand Cru has earned $337,078, of which $240,000 came from victories in the Kelso and Bold Ruler.
Mack, a former member of the New York Racing AssociationÕs board of trustees from 1990 to 2000, has bred and/or raced numerous stakes winners, including November Snow, who won the 1992 Alabama (gr. I) and Test (gr. I) Stakes at Saratoga and that yearÕs Rare Perfume Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont.
Mack also has raced Canadian classic winners BruceÕs Mill, Cryptocloser, and Peteski, the 1993 Canadian Triple Crown winner. Peteski also won a memorable 1993 Molson Export Million Stakes (Can-II) at Woodbine over Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Sea Hero, who ran third, and Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Colonial Affair, who finished unplaced.
Le Grand Cru is the third stakes winner out of the El Gran Senor mare Ice the Champagne, whose two other stakes winners, the full brothers Ice Horse and Ice Point (by Roy), captured group I events in their native Argentina. Le Grand Cru is the last foal out of Ice the Champagne, who died in 2006.
Dynaformer has sired 109 stakes winners, including 19 added-money winners in 2009. He stands at Robert N. ClayÕs Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky. His 2009 fee was $150,000.ÑD.S.
