What Native Ruler lacks in aestheticsÑheÕs missing half his tailÑhe makes up in heart. Since being claimed for $25,000 by Maggi Moss in December after a winless 2007 season, heÕs gone undefeated in four starts this year. His latest conquest was a game, three-quarter length victory at six furlongs in the Iowa Sprint Handicap at Prairie Meadows June 28 during the Iowa Festival of Racing.
ÒI am really happy for Chris (Richard), the trainer,Ó said Moss. ÒHe is just starting out and his work ethic and the long hours he puts in and his love for the horses makes this win very special for me.Ó
Based in Des Moines, Iowa, Moss has only been in racing for a decade, but sheÕs made a gargantuan splash. An Eclipse Award finalist for 2007 as outstanding owner, she led the nation in wins in 2006 and was second in 2007. Her other stakes horses this year include graded winners Indian Chant and Temporary Saint.
ÒMy biggest passion right now is the horse itself, and life after racing for horses,Ó said Moss. ÒI am working hard on trying to take care of the horses and (their) welfare. I am on the national Thoroughbred Retirement (Foundation) board and was part of opening the first retirement center for horses in Iowa at the Newton Prison. We are starting a foundation here for horses that get hurt racing, that can be saved, to pay for the surgeries.Ó
Moss made other headlines in the days before Native RulerÕs win. She had taken a sabbatical for the past year and a half from her practice as a high-profile defense attorney to concentrate on her racing stable, but will defend trainer Steve Asmussen in a Texas lidocaine positive.
Shadwell FarmÕs Rick Nichols and Claiborne FarmÕs Bernie Sams bred Native Ruler in Kentucky. They had purchased his dam from Shadwell carrying him in utero at the 2004 Keeneland January mixed sale for $55,000 through Lavin Bloodstock Services. The mare is currently in foal to Jazil.
Native Ruler was raised at the Lavin familyÕs Longfield Farm near Goshen, Ky. Nichols and Sams also previously bred 2006 dual Italian stakes winner Iuturna together.
World record setter Elusive Quality is the sire of Native Ruler and 34 other stakes winners. Group winners in Saudi Arabia and Dubai are among his three other 2008 added-money winners. He stands for $75,000 at Sheikh MohammedÕs Darley near Lexington.ÑJ.W.
