When Chad Schumer purchased the mare Festal for his EMF Broodmares investment partnership in 2006, her 3-year-old son Thorn Song had placed just once in a maiden event at Churchill Downs.

Three years later, to SchumerÕs delight, the colt by UnbridledÕs Song captured the May 25 Shoemaker Mile Stakes at Hollywood Park, his second grade I victory.

ÒWe were looking for mares that were by recognizable broodmare sires that were in foal to either successful stallions or potentially successful stallions,Ó said Schumer, who acquired Festal for $26,000 at the Keeneland November mixed sale. In foal to Roman Ruler, she was consigned by Hill ÔnÕ Dale Sales Agency, agent.

ÒWe thought she was a great value. She had started out in California with some lesser stallions. I knew Thorn Song had some potential to show up and win and maybe be a stakes horse, so we took a chance on her.Ó

It turned out to be one of the smartest decisions Schumer ever made when Thorn Song sang his way to victory in the Shoemaker Mile.

In front-running fashion, 6-year-old Thorn Song won his eighth race in 27 starts and became a millionaire for Ahmed ZayatÕs Zayat Stables and trainer Dale Romans.

The Shoemaker Mile marked the fourth graded stakes victory for Thorn Song, who won the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IT) at Keeneland last fall.

Thorn Song was bred in Kentucky by Pinnacle Racing and Taylor Made Farm. He was bought for $200,000 by Zayat at the 2005 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-year-old sale from Niall Brennan Stables, agent. Even though Zayat has been involved in the Thoroughbred industry for less than five years, the native of Cairo, Egypt, is no stranger to success. Having made his fortune in the brewing industry, Zayat has campaigned other grade I winners Downthedustyroad, Pioneerof the Nile, and Point Ashley.

Thorn SongÕs dam, Festal, is out of the grade I-winning Secretariat mare Fiesta Lady.

ÒIt was such a good family, and she hadnÕt had a lot of opportunity up until then,Ó said Patricia Clark, who operates EMF Broodmares with Schumer and keeps Festal at her Lynnwood Farm near Paris, Ky. ÒSheÕs a correct, substantial mare, and sheÕs an easy mareÉshe has a nice disposition, and sheÕs intelligent.Ó

Festal produced a colt by Political Force May 3 and was bred to Broken Vow on a May 15 cover.

UnbridledÕs Song is the sire of 77 stakes winners. Among his eight 2009 added-money winners are graded victors One Caroline (gr. II), Honest Man (gr. III), and Old Fashioned (gr. III). UnbridledÕs Song stands for $125,000 at the Taylor familyÕs Taylor Made Stallions near Nicholasville, Ky.ÑE.M.
