Thorn Song, who lost to Einstein three times this year, finally got a win over that rival. Thorn Song beat 1-2 favorite Einstein July 4 in the Firecracker Handicap (gr. IIT) at Churchill Downs.
Einstein finished ahead of Thorn Song in the Gulfstream Park Turf (gr. IT), Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (gr. IT), and MakerÕs Mark Mile (gr. IT) Stakes. But Thorn Song had it his way in the Firecracker. He led all the way to win the mile race by a length in 1:36.69. It was Thorn SongÕs first stakes win since the horse won the River City Handicap (gr. IIIT) last November at Churchill.
Thorn Song races for Zayat Stables, owned by Egyptian beverage mogul Ahmed Zayat. The outfit also won the Jersey Shore Stakes (gr. III) at Monmouth Park with J Be K the same day as the Firecracker. J Be K also has won this yearÕs Woody Stephens (gr. II) and Bay Shore (gr. III) Stakes in New York.
Bred by Pinnacle Racing and the Taylor familyÕs Taylor Made Farm, Thorn Song was consigned to three sales, but only sold twice. Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, consigned him to the 2004 Keeneland September yearling sale, where he was bought for $160,000 by Mike Ryan, agent. The following year, he was purchased by Ahmed Zayat for $200,000 from Niall Brennan Stables, agent, at the 2005 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale of 2-year-olds in training.
Zayat Stables has about 200 horses, 170 of which are in training. The outfit keeps about 20 broodmares in Kentucky and plans to enter the stallion business soon.
Zayat Stables also is represented by 2008 graded stakes winners EatonÕs Gift, Sherine, and Z Fortune. The outfit ranks second by earnings this year, with $3.9 million.
Taylor Made Farm, which is located near Nicholasville, Ky., stands Thorn SongÕs sire, UnbridledÕs Song. Taylor Made also is the co-breeder of Intangaroo, who has won this yearÕs Humana Distaff Stakes (gr. I) and Santa Monica Handicap (gr. I).
Thorn Song is the first stakes winner from the Storm Bird mare Festal, who is out of the Secretariat grade I-winning mare Fiesta Lady. FestalÕs yearling, a Roman Ruler colt, and her 2008 offspring, a Value Plus filly, were bred by EMF Broodmares.
UnbridledÕs Song has sired 67 stakes winners. His nine stakes winners this year also include Eight Belles (gr. II), First Defence (gr. IIIT), and Noonmark (gr. III). UnbridledÕs SongÕs fee at Taylor Made is $150,000.ÑD.S.
