Thorn Song may not win them all, but he certainly makes the wins count. The 5-year-oldÕs latest conquest was the Oct. 4 $600,000 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IT), the richest race on KeenelandÕs Fallstars weekend schedule. He set all the pace en route to a 11Ú4-length win while getting the mile in a blazing 1:34.97. It was his first grade I score.

A lightly-raced maiden at 2 and 3, Thorn Song burst onto the scene at 4 in 2007. He took a maiden special weight at Churchill Downs, then added a back-to-back allowance and optional claimer at Saratoga. A win in ChurchillÕs River City Handicap (gr. IIIT) completed his 2007 season.

HeÕs done even better this year, adding the Firecracker Handicap (gr. IIT) and a Churchill optional claimer to his tally prior to the Shadwell Turf Mile score.

Although heÕs won at 11Ú8- and 13Ú16-mile distances, itÕs a flat eight furlongs that seems to suit Thorn Song best. In six tries at the distance, he has three wins and three placings. The Shadwell Turf Mile win guarantees the Dale Romans trainee a spot in the starting gate for the Oct. 25 BreedersÕ Cup Mile (gr. IT) at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.

Bred in Kentucky by Pinnacle Racing and Taylor Made Farm, Thorn Song carries the colors of Ahmed ZayatÕs racing empire. Zayat, a Cairo, Egypt, native and Harvard graduate, made his fortune in the beverage industry, but has found success in several other ventures as well. In 2005, he began Zayat Stables and quickly became a major player on the racetrack and a force to be reckoned with in the sales ring.

With about 230 horses in the Zayat operation, ZayatÕs Shadwell Turf Mile is just one of several glittering prizes already under the teamÕs belt. Zayat Stables is the second-leading owner of 2008 in the nation by earnings.

ÒEvery win is important to us,Ó said Sobhy Sonbol, vice president of Zayat Stables. ÒWe really try to aim for our horses to be able to compete at the graded stakes level.Ó

BreedersÕ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner UnbridledÕs Song is the sire of Thorn Song and 70 other stakes winners. Among his 14 added-money winners of 2008 are additional grade I winners First Defence and Midshipman, plus Sing Baby Sing, winner of the Phoenix Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland the same day as the Shadwell Turf Mile. By Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Unbridled, 15-year-old UnbridledÕs Song stands at the Taylor familyÕs Taylor Made Stallions near Nicholasville, Ky. His 2008 fee was $150,000.ÑJ.W.
