Kiss the Kid began his 2009 campaign the same way he ended his 2008 season: with a neck victory in stakes company. The son of Lemon Drop Kid closed his 5-year-old year with a win in the Oct. 10 Cliff Hanger Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Meadowlands, and came back off a layoff to defeat SocietyÕs Chairman in the Ft. Lauderdale Stakes at Gulfstream Park Jan. 10.
ÒHe ran a great race coming off that kind of layoff,Ó said trainer Amy Tarrant, who also owns Kiss the Kid. ÒHe is versatile. He ran third in the Donn Handicap (gr. I) last year as a longshot, but I do think he is a little better on turf. HeÕs just a real nice hard-knocking horse.Ó
Tarrant bought Kiss the Kid in the name of Hardacre Farm for $270,000 at the 2004 Keeneland September yearling sale from agent Three Chimneys Sales. He has won three stakes races and placed in six more for Tarrant.
In addition to Kiss the Kid, Tarrant owned and trained multiple stakes winner Indy Wind, who retired at the end of 2008. A son of A.P. Indy, Indy Wind will begin his stallion career at Journeyman Stud in Florida.
Kiss the Kid was bred in Kentucky by Richard Santulli and George PrussinÕs Jayeff B Stables. He is out of the winning Danzig mare Black Tie Kiss, who is a half-sister to 1991 Horse of the Year Black Tie Affair and group I winner Great Palm, and was a $450,000 sale yearling in her own right.
Black Tie Kiss is also the dam of Lemon Kiss, Kiss the KidÕs stakes-winning full sister. Lemon Kiss was sold to BBA Ireland for $200,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November mixed sale by Hill ÔnÕ Dale Sales Agency, agent.
Black Tie Kiss died in 2007 at age 13. Her last foal is an unraced 3-year-old Smart Strike colt named Morning Dress, who was sent to Ireland as a yearling.
Lemon Drop Kid is the sire of 38 stakes winners, including 21 added-money winners in 2008. The 13-year-old son of Kingmambo stands at LaneÕs End Farm near Versailles, Ky. His 2009 fee is $50,000.ÑA.H.D.
