ÒWe are just so thrilled,Ó said winning owner/trainer Amy Tarrant after Kiss the Kid won the Cliff Hanger Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Meadowlands. ÒIÕve had this horse since he was a baby and my whole team and I have worked so hard for this moment. IÕve only been in the business about six years now, and this is truly the highlight.Ó
Tarrant races the Lemon Drop Kid horse in the name of Hardacre Farm. She bought Kiss the Kid for $270,000 at the 2004 Keeneland September yearling sale from Three Chimneys Sales, agent.
Kiss the Kid, who broke from the outside 10 hole in the Cliff Hanger and won by a neck, is the first graded stakes winner for Tarrant as a trainer and the second for her as an owner. Her filly Bold World captured the 2002 Azalea BreedersÕ Cup Stakes (gr. III) at Calder Race Course in one of her seven stakes wins.
Tarrant also is owner/trainer of 2008 stakes winner Indy Wind, who won the Frisk Me Now Stakes at Monmouth Park in June. Indy Wind has won five stakes from 2006-08.
Kiss the Kid was bred in Kentucky by Richard Santulli and George PrussinÕs Jayeff B Stables. Alone and in partnership, the outfit is represented as breeder and/or owner by champions Banshee Breeze and Safely Kept, plus such graded stakes winners as Ciro, Mutafaweq, Melhor Ainda, and Jonesboro (in 2008). Safely KeptÕs big win came in the 1990 BreedersÕ Cup Sprint (gr. I).
Jayeff B also is the breeder of Kiss the KidÕs stakes-winning full sister, Lemon Kiss, who won this yearÕs Emerald Distaff Handicap.
Kiss the KidÕs dam, deceased Black Tie Kiss, is a half-brother to Black Tie Affair, who was named 1991 Horse of the Year and champion older male after winning the BreedersÕ Cup Classic (gr. I). Black Tie Kiss died in 2007. Her last foal is a Smart Strike 2-year-old colt named Morning Dress.
Lemon Drop Kid has sired 34 stakes winners, with 17 stakes winners this year, including Charitable Man (gr. II) and Sweet Hope (gr. III). He stands at William S. FarishÕs LaneÕs End Farm near Lexington. His 2008 fee was $35,000.ÑD.S.
