In his first start since last July, multiple grade III winner Cosmonaut added to his resumŽ when he defeated Tam Lin by 11Ú2 lengths in the Fort Marcy Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont Park May 2. The Fort Marcy used to be contested at Aqueduct.

Cosmonaut was away from the races for almost 10 months because of a right front ankle fracture that happened shortly after he finished second in the Arlington Handicap (gr. IIIT) last year. The 7-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid races for Carl LizzaÕs Flying Zee Stable.

ÒWhen I saw the fast fractions, I was a little concerned,Ó winning trainer Philip Serpe said. ÒThe turf is a little soft, and they were going pretty fast for soft turf, but he showed how great he really is today. HeÕs an unbelievable little horse. I donÕt know whatÕs next. HeÕs been off for awhile, so IÕll talk to Mr. Lizza and let him decide.Ó

Throughout his career Cosmonaut has won five stakes and placed in seven more. His other graded victories came in the 2006 Golden Gate Fields Handicap (gr. IIIT) and back-to-back runnings of the Arlington Handicap in 2006 and 2007. He ran third in the 2007 NetJets BreedersÕ Cup Mile (gr. IT).

Cosmonaut was purchased by Carlos Martin, agent, for $105,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. He was bred in Kentucky by Patricia Pavlish out of the stakes-placed Capote mare Cosmic Fire. Pavlish acquired the mare in 1996 while she was in training upon the recommendation of Kentucky horseman John T. Ward Jr.

Although Cosmonaut is Cosmic FireÕs only stakes winner, her other four foals to race are all winners, including stakes-placed KickinÕ the Clouds. The 16-year-old mare has a juvenile Grand Slam filly and a yearling Distorted Humor colt. She was not bred for this year.

Lemon Drop Kid is the sire of 41 stakes winners including additional 2009 added-money winners Santa Teresita (gr. I), Charitable Man (gr. II), Bronze Cannon (Eng-II), Kiss the Kid (gr. IIIT), Kathleens Reel, Kiss With a Twist, and RichardÕs Kid. The 13-year-old son of Kingmambo stands at LaneÕs End near Versailles, Ky., for $50,000.ÑA.H.D.
