In spite of an unfortunate accident that resulted in one horse being euthanized in the May 19 Dixie Stakes (gr. IIT) at Pimlico, Remarkable News delivered a good report to his connections by taking the $250,000 race by three-quarters of a length.
Remarkable News, a 5-year-old son of Chayim, is trained by Angel Penna Jr. The horse has won eight races on the turf, including two stakes last year, the Fourstardave Handicap (gr. IIT) at Saratoga and the Connaught Cup Stakes (Can-IIIT) at Woodbine.
Remarkable News also posted runner-up efforts in the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IT) at Keeneland and Poker Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Belmont Park. Last time out, he was a troubled sixth in the Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (gr. IIT).
Penna found his second graded victory of the year with Remarkable News, as he also saddled Chatain to win the Jan. 6 Hal’s Hope Handicap (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park.
Owned by Holly Rincon and bred by her Agropecuaria Luisiana in Venezuela, Remarkable News is out of the unraced Alhajras mare Unreachable. Unreachable’s third dam Resolver (by Reviewer) produced grade I winners Adjudicating, Time for a Change, and Dispute.
“I’ve dedicated my whole life to studying pedigrees,” said Rincon, who is a resident of Ocala, Fla., but travels often to her 160-acre farm in Venezuela, where she keeps 40 mares. “I buy one sire, and then for all his daughters I buy another sire that I think would be the perfect cross. (Remarkable News) is a true homebred because I own his sire. In this breeding industry, you can do many things, so I decided on inbreeding to Natalma—that’s been my theory. (Remarkable News is inbred 4x4 to Natalma.) I think the two sires complement each other a lot because each one has different ingredients. For me (breeding) is like a big puzzle where you have to put all these little pieces together.”
Remarkable News is the first foal out of Unreachable, who is also the dam of Sir Antonio, a 4-year-old full brother to the Dixie winner and a group III winner in his native Venezuela.
Rincon said that Unreachable had recently delivered a Chayim filly. Kept at Agropecuaria Luisiana, she will be bred again to the stallion in 2008.
According to Rincon, Chayim has sired 23 stakes winners. He stands for a private fee at Agropecuaria Luisiana.—E.M.
