Cosmonaut rocketed to the front and never looked back, winning the Arlington Handicap (gr. IIIT) in nearly wire-to-wire fashion at Arlington Park July 22.
The 4-year-old Lemon Drop Kid colt continued to show his affinity for the turf, where three of his four victories have come. The colt’s lone win on the dirt came in the Golden Gate Fields Handicap (gr. III) March 25 after the race was switched from the turf to the dirt.
In his last previous start, the Patrick Biancone trainee finished off the board behind longshot winner Seek Gold in the June 17 Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I). In addition to his two graded stakes wins this year, Cosmonaut finished second behind Therecomesatiger in the 2005 Commonwealth Turf Stakes for owner Carl Lizza Jr’s Flying Zee Stable.
Cosmonaut was purchased by Carlos Martin, agent, for $105,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Patricia Pavlish and is out of the graded stakes-placed Capote mare Cosmic Fire.
Bred in Kentucky by Donald and Roberta May Zuckerman, Cosmic Fire finished second in the 1995 Sorrento Stakes (gr. II) and the 1996 Bay Meadows Oaks (gr. III). She is a half-sister to three other stakes-placed runners and is out of the stakes-winning Lyphard’s Wish mare Future Bright.
Out of the stakes-winning Al Hattab mare Pro Tab, Future Bright is a half-sister to fellow stakes winners Southern Crown and Duke of Roni. She is also a half-sister to Gray Tab, who is the dam of stakes winners Speed World, Going Gray, and Ladies Excuse Me, and Miss Drum Beat, the dam of Puerto Rican champion Claudina.
All four of Cosmic Fire’s foals to race are winners. She is also the dam of the stakes-placed Dixieland Band filly Kickin’ the Clouds, who finished third in the Heavenly Cause Handicap at Churchill Downs July 16. Cosmic Fire’s juvenile gelding, Cosmic Rover, is a full brother to Cosmonaut. She was barren to Aldebaran in 2005 and aborted an Aldebaran foal in 2006.
Lemon Drop Kid is the sire of nine stakes winners, including other 2006 added-money winners Lemons Forever (gr. I), Malakoff (Can-III), Perilous Pursuit, and Candy Ball. The 10-year-old son of Kingmambo stood the 2006 season for $20,000 at William Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky.—A.H.D.
