Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Giacomo has finally recorded his first victory since capturing the classic race in 2005. In his first trip to Del Mar July 22, the multi-millionaire son of Holy Bull scored in the San Diego Handicap (gr. II) by a head over Preachinatthebar.

Though he had been winless in his previous four outings, Giacomo ran third in both the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) following his Derby feat, and the Strub Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita in his 2006 debut. He was sidelined for nearly eight months after the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), where he finished seventh and suffered bone chips in his ankle and knee.

Prior to the San Diego Handicap, the John Shirreffs-trained colt had a 41¼2-month layoff after being beaten by 111¼2 lengths in the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) in March.

Giacomo has placed in two other graded races during his 13-start career, including the Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) as a 2-year-old.

He runs as a homebred for Anne Moss and her husband, Jerry, who is a founder of A&M Records. The couple is represented by additional grade I winners Kudos, Tarlow, Zoonaqua, and Sardula, who captured the 1994 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). The Mosses found other graded stakes success at Santa Anita Park in February, when their Spellbinder took the San Antonio Handicap (gr. II).

Giacomo is out of the Stop the Music mare Set Them Free, who won four stakes on the California circuit at two and four, earning $173,275. Set Them Free raced in the colors of the Mosses, who acquired her through trainer Brian Mayberry for $45,000 at the 1992 Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-year-old sale. She is a half-sister to group-placed stakes winner Vachti (by Crystal Palace).

In addition to Giacomo, Set Them Free produced graded stakes-placed Sea Jewel. The daughter of Sea Hero is the only foal of Set Them Free to be sold at auction. She was purchased for $300,000 by Adena Springs Farm at the 2004 Keeneland November mixed sale from Bluewater Sales, agent.

Set Them Free, who has yearling and 2-year-old colts by Pleasant Tap, delivered a colt by Giant’s Causeway April 30.

Holy Bull is the sire of 26 stakes winners, including other 2006 added-money winners Bishop Court Hill (gr. I) and Holy Fashion. The 15-year-old son of Great Above stands at Darley at Jonabell near Lexington, where his 2006 fee was $15,000.—E.M.
