If there is a turf horse in the world at a mile better than Brazilian-bred Leroidesanimaux, he—or she—would have to be a most frightening individual. Besting seven other grade/group I winners, including two Breeders’ Cup statue holders, the son of Candy Stripes went nearly gate-to-wire for the top prize in Santa Anita’s $300,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap (gr. IT), his second consecutive grade I stakes and fourth straight graded stakes since beginning this tear in the Inglewood Handicap (gr. IIIT) last May.
Imported stateside by owners T N T Stud for his 2004 campaign, the Bobby Frankel-trained 5-year-old has now won six straight on the Western Coast since finishing a close fourth in his debut in this country in January 2004 over the same Santa Anita track. His bankroll is $624,337 and climbing.
Leroidesanimaux races for Goncalo and Regina Borges Torrealba’s T N T Stud. The couple lives in Rio de Janeiro where Goncalo Torrealba works in both the banking and shipbuilding trades.
In addition to Leroidesanimaux, T N T races—in partnership with Mary Slack—grade II winner Lundy’s Liability, victorious in this year’s San Antonio Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita and fifth in the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) the same day as the Kilroe Mile.
The Kilroe winner was bred in the Southern Hemisphere by Haras Bage Do Sul. He was produced from the unraced Ahonoora mare Dissemble, a British-bred dam of two additional stakes winners in Brazil: group I winner Uapybo, by Blush Rambler; and group III winner Disport, by the Irish-bred stallion Blue Stag.
Dissemble’s first recorded foal since Leroidesanimaux, an unnamed War Chant filly, was foaled in 2004 and sold as a weanling at the Keenland November mixed sale, where Stewart L. Armstrong paid $625,000 to the consignment of Indian Creek, agent. The filly has since died.
Candy Stripes is the sire of 53 known stakes winners, including additional 2005 added-money victors Lundy’s Liability (gr. II) and Equipado (Uru-I). Candy Stripes has stood in both North and South America and is currently based at Haras Carampangue in Argentina.—P.S.
