Translated aptly from the French, Leroidesanimaux, “the king of the animals,” could be indeed just that. But feel free to call him what he truly is—a monster.
The Brazilian-bred, 5-year-old son of Candy Stripes maintained a win streak that began in January 2004 with a widening 73/4-length win in the Sept. 18 Atto Mile (Can-IT) at Woodbine. His eight straight scores include the 2004 Citation Handicap (gr. IT), and the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (gr. IT) and Fourstardave (gr. IIT) Handicaps this season, a form that makes him a likely Breeders’ Cup entrant and Eclipse Award contender.
Imported stateside by his owners for the 2004 campaign, Leroidesanimaux races for Goncalo and Regina Borges Torrealba’s T N T Stud. The couple lives in Rio de Janeiro where Goncalo works in both the banking and shipbuilding trades.
T N T Stud is having an exceptional year in the United States. In addition to Leroidesanimaux, the outfit also campaigns stellar filly Melhor Ainda, winner of the Sands Point Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont, and additional graded winners License To Run and Lundy’s Liability.
The Atto Mile winner’s first two dams, the Ahonoora mare Dissemble and the High Line mare Kerali, were bred in England by Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms.
Leroidesanimaux’ pedigree certainly suggests his current success on the turf—and at his specialty of the mile or slightly longer distance. Ahonoora won the group II William Hill Sprint Championship in England in 1979, and Leroidesanimaux’ grandsire, Blushing Groom, was a champion European miler in 1977 and winner of five career group I events including the Grand Criterium at Longchamp.
Dissemble, who produced all three of her stakes winners in Brazil, arrived in North America in 2002. She produced a War Chant filly in 2004 for Indian Creek Farm and Stonerside Stable. That filly, sold as a weanling at the Keeneland November mixed sale, was bought by Stewart L. Armstrong for $625,000. She has since died.
Indian Creek owns 75% of Dissemble and keeps her at the Paris, Ky., nursery. She produced a Giant’s Causeway colt April 3 for Indian Creek and Alessandro Arcangeli, and is currently in foal to Storm Cat.
Candy Stripes is the sire of 55 known stakes winners, including additional 2005 added-money winners Lundy’s Liability (gr. II), Banshee Brad, Equipado (Uru-I), Invasor (Uru-I), and Ilha Da Vitoria (SAf-II). Candy Stripes has stood in both North and South America and is currently based at Haras Carampangue in Argentina.—P.V.S.
