It was a Todd Pletcher exacta in the Feb. 14 Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park with Limehouse outdueling Deputy Storm by 21/4 lengths to take the seven-furlong event. Earlier in the day, Pletcher watched Value Plus win his 3-year-old debut and Shaniko finish second behind Swingforthefences under first-level allowance conditions.
Limehouse was making his first start since finishing third behind Eurosilver in last October’s Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity (gr. II) at Keeneland. Buckram Oak’s Eurosilver scored a five-length win in a Feb. 4 allowance contest at Gulfstream. James Spence’s Deputy Storm had been idle since finishing second in the Sapling Stakes (gr. III) on Aug. 9 at Monmouth Park.
Limehouse races in the green and yellow silks of Cot Campbell’s Dogwood Stable. Campbell purchased the son of Grand Slam for $140,000 at the 2002 Fasig-Tipton New York yearling sale from the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent.
Cheryl Curtin bred Limehouse in Florida from the Dixieland Band mare Dixieland Blues. Richard Curtin purchased Dixieland Blues for $75,000 from the consignment of her breeder, Issam Fares’ Fares Farms, at the 1995 Keeneland September yearling sale. Fares had purchased Blue Jean Baby, the second dam of Limehouse, at the 1991 Keeneland November mixed sale for $250,000. Consigned by Bob Courtney, agent, she was in foal to Ogygian.
Blue Jean Baby was then consigned by Fares to the 1998 Keeneland November mixed sale where Hiroshi Fujita purchased her for $250,000. In foal to Tabasco Cat, Blue Jean Baby was sent to Japan.
Dixieland Blues was consigned by Eaton Sales, agent, to the 2003 Keeneland November mixed sale in foal to Montbrook where she failed to meet her reserve and was bought back for $475,000.
The Curtins own Shanbally Acres near Ocala, Fla. Their mares are boarded at Hidden Point Farm in Florida.
Dixieland Blues has a 2-year-old Honour and Glory colt, Blues and Royals, who was purchased by John Ferguson, agent, on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed, for $400,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale. The mare has a yearling full sister to Limehouse.
Grand Slam is the sire of Limehouse and 11 other added-money winners, including additional 2004 stakes winners Cajun Beat (gr. III), Fire Slam (gr. III), Alke (gr. III), Master David, and Big Score. Grand Slam stands at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. His 2004 fee is $75,000.—L.D.
