It didn’t take long for Dashboard Drummer to return part of his $200,000 purchase price. The 2-year-old gelding earned $60,000 in winning the Aug. 9 Sapling Stakes (gr. III) at Monmouth Park at 4-1 in his first start for his new owners.
An Oklahoma-bred, Dashboard Drummer races for Double S and Preferred Pals Stables in partnership with Edwin Wachtel. He formerly raced for his breeders, Bob and Paulette Pogue, owners of Woodhaven Ranch near Fairland, Okla.
Dashboard Drummer started out by setting a track record of :22.20 for two furlongs at Prairie Meadows May 9, then won the Prairie Gold Juvenile Stakes June 27 at five furlongs, scoring by five lengths in :57.23. Those efforts didn’t go unnoticed.
“Mr. Wachtel and Len Friedman (of the Ragozin handicapping sheets) spotted him,” said trainer Allen Iwinski. “I went to Iowa, and he wasn’t anything special to look at. Then I watched him work and got excited.”
So excited that Iwinski bought a 10% interest in Dashboard Drummer. Iwinski, who has 33 horses at Monmouth and 45 at Delaware Park, might run Dashboard Drummer next in the Aug. 30 Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga.
The Pogues stand Dashboard Drummer’s sire, Alamocitos, at their 48-acre ranch. They have been involved in racing some 15 years and have campaigned additional stakes winners Mick and Kidd Cat. A stakes winner last year, homebred Mick remains in training. Kidd Cat, whom the couple raced in partnership, stands at stud at Woodhaven.
Dashboard Drummer is Alamocitos’ first stakes winner. The 9-year-old stallion has covered some 18-20 mares this year, including the Sapling winner’s dam, Groovin Moment, who has been pronounced in foal. Alamocitos’ fee was $1,000.—D.S.
