During, who failed to finish in his last previous start, the Nov. 28 Clark Handicap (gr. II) at Churchill Downs, rebounded successfully with a length win over Toccet in the Jan. 10 San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Stakes (gr. II). It is the fourth stakes victory for the colt who is trained by Bob Baffert for owner James McIngvale.

Robert Wilensky of Atlanta, Ga., bred During in the name Gulf States Racing Stables II. The colt was foaled and raised at Jody and Michelle Huckabay’s Elm Tree Farm near Paris, Ky.

“He always showed us at the farm that he could be any kind of horse,” said Jody Huckabay. “We’re just tickled to see him do so well.”

Wilensky purchased During’s dam, Blading Saddle, for $20,000 at the 1988 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s February select sale of 2-year-olds in training. She won nine of her 39 starts for him, then retired to Elm Tree Farm. Wilensky has bred all of her foals. She is one of about five mares he keeps in Kentucky. He also owns Falun Dafa, the mare’s 1999 foal. She was sold as a yearling to Kenneth McPeek, as agent, and made two starts for him and his client, Select Stable. On Wilensky’s behalf, Jody Huckabay repurchased the mare for $3,000 at the 2003 Keeneland January mixed sale from Parrish Hill Farm, agent. She is now in foal to Yonaguska and is booked to Kafwain, a son of Cherokee Run. Blading Saddle was affected by mare reproductive loss syndrome in both 2002 and 2003, but she is currently carrying a foal by Chester House. She is booked to Cherokee Run, the sire of During, for 2004.

Cherokee Run has sired 16 stakes winners. The champion sprinter in 1994, Cherokee Run stands at Darley at Jonabell near Lexington. His fee was raised from $20,000 in 2003 to $40,000 in 2004.—K.I.G.
