Soaring Free may not have sprouted wings yet, but he has certainly learned to cruise over turf courses at high speeds. Now perfect in six grass tries this year, the Sam-Son Farms homebred scored his first Can-I victory in taking the Atto Mile at Woodbine Sept. 19. Last year’s champion sprinter in Canada, Soaring Free, a 5-year-old gelding, has now taken nine of a dozen turf starts in his career, amassing most of his $1.8 million in lifetime earnings on the green.
The Ontario, Canada-based Sam-Son Thoroughbred breeding operation is now 32 years old, and has plenty to show for its efforts. Started by the late Ernie Samuel and today continued by his daughter Tammy Samuel-Balaz, Sam-Son standouts include Eclipse award-winning homebreds Dance Smartly and Sky Classic and Canadian homebred champions Dancethruthedawn and Quiet Resolve, as well as Soaring Free’s sire, grade I winner Smart Strike.
Sam-Son, in fact, bred Soaring Free’s dam as well, Dancing With Wings, winner of the 1991 Ontario Damsel Stakes. A daughter of Danzig, Dancing With Wings also produced Hummingbird Red, a filly by Red Ransom who finished second in the Ontario Damsel and third in a pair of Keeneland stakes.
Soaring Free’s second dam, Loudrangle, was Canada’s 1986 Broodmare of the Year. A two-time stakes winner, Loudrangle, by Quadrangle, produced stakes winner Tiffany Tam (by Tentam); No Louder, a Nodouble colt who won the Toronto Cup Handicap and the Plate Trial in 1986; Ruling Angel, a Vice Regent filly who was Canada’s Horse of the Year and champion 2-year-old filly in 1986, and who won 10 stakes in her career; Tilt My Halo, by Halo, Canada’s champion 3-year-old filly in 1988 and a five-time stakes winner; and Slew of Angels, a Slew o’ Gold colt who took the 1989 Challenger Stakes.
Smart Srike is the sire of 26 stakes winners. Among his nine 2004 added-money victors are Shadow Cast (gr. II), and Sam-Son homebreds Eye of the Sphynx (Can-II), and Shoal Water (Can IIT). He stands at William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky., where his 2004 fee was $25,000.—L.S.
