Breeder/owner Charles E. Fipke is world renowned in the field of diamond exploration. His gem of a racehorse, millionaire Perfect Soul, is quickly becoming renowned for his racing skills at Keeneland.

Perfect Soul, who won the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IT) last October at the Lexington track, took the April 9 Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) there in course-record time of 1:33.54.

Fipke, from Kalowna, British Columbia, Canada, earned a 2003 Sovereign Award, compliments of Perfect Soul and the horse’s turf exploits. In addition to his Keeneland stakes win last year, Perfect Soul won the King Edward Breeders’ Cup Handicap (Can-IIT) at Woodbine and placed in the Atto Mile (Can-IT) and Chinese Cultural Centre (Can-IIT) Stakes, both at Woodbine, and the Citgo Dixie Stakes (gr. IIT) at Pimlico. Perfect Soul’s third dam, Queen Louie, was Canada’s champion 2-year-old filly in 1970.

Fipke, whose life and exploration feats are chronicled in the biography Fire Into Ice, bought Perfect Soul’s dam, Ball Chairman, for $180,000 at the 1994 Keeneland November breeding stock sale through Halvorson Bloodstock from Lane’s End, agent. The mare was in foal to Lane’s End stallion Dixieland Band, and the resultant foal, Dimontina, was stakes-placed.

Ball Chairman was sent to Coolmore Stud in Ireland, where she has been mated several times to farm stallion Sadler’s Wells. Sadler’s Wells is the sire of Perfect Soul.

Sadler’s Wells has sired 229 stakes winners, including additional 2004 added-money winners Brian Boru (in Ireland) and Prospect Park (in France). Sadler’s Wells stands for a private fee.—D.S.
