Touch of the Blues has seemed to better everything that he did last year, including rebounding from a fifth-place finish in the 2002 Atto Mile Stakes (Can-IT) to a half-length win over Soaring Free in the Sept. 14 edition at Woodbine.
The Atto Mile was only the fourth start on the year for Touch of the Blues. He began the year with a third-place effort in the April 11 Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) at Keeneland and was third again in the Shoemaker Breeders’ Cup Mile Stakes (gr. IT), a race where he finished eighth last year. He then set a course record for one mile at Del Mar, getting the distance in 1:32.22 in his nose victory over Inesperado in the restricted Wickerr Handicap.
Trainer Neil Drysdale, who conditions the homebred Touch of the Blues for Sheikh Maktoum’s Gainsborough Farm, said the 6-year-old son of Cadeaux Genereux will follow the same path as last year which will see him start next in the Oct. 4 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IT) at Keeneland followed by the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) Oct. 25 at Santa Anita.
The female family of Touch of the Blues traces back to the Greentree Stud-bred Home by Dark (by Hill Prince), the fourth dam of Touch of the Blues. Home by Dark produced the stakes-winning third dam of Touch of the Blues, Gray Mirage, winner of the 1972 Pinafore Stakes at Suffolk Downs. The mare also produced stakes winner Bold Impulse and grade I stakes-placed Prince of Reason, however, the most famous of offspring to be produced from Home by Dark was the 1968 champion 3-year-old filly and filly Triple Crown winner Dark Mirage (by Persian Road II). Dark Mirage died at age four with a career record of 27-12-3-2.
Silabteni, the dam of Touch of the Blues, has a yearling Machiavellian colt and foaled a full sister to Touch of the Blues this year.
Cadeaux Genereux is the sire of Touch of the Blues and 40 other added-money winners, including additional 2003 stakes winners Desert Deer (Eng-II), Diacada (Ger-II), Bonus (Ire-III), Hugs Dancer, Silca’s Gift, and Irresistible (all in England), Wathab (in Ireland), and Toylsome (in Germany). Cadeaux Genereux stands at Whitsbury Manor Stud near Hants, England. His 2003 fee was 20,000 pounds.—L.D.
