Perfect Soul notched the first added-money win of his career in the June 15 King Edward Breeders’ Cup Handicap (Can-IIT) at Woodbine. The 5-year-old son of Sadler’s Wells covered the 11/8-mile race in 1:49.60. Strut the Stage was 21/2 lengths back in second, with Del Mar Show another 11/4 lengths behind in third.

Prior to the King Edward, Perfect Soul finished second, a half-length behind Dr. Brendler, in the May 17 Citgo Dixie Stakes (gr. IIT) after beginning the season with an impressive 51/4-length score in a Keeneland turf allowance contest on April 13.

Roger Attfield conditions the homebred Perfect Soul for Charles Fipke, who bred the bay horse in Ireland from the Secretariat mare Ball Chairman. The mare sold in foal to Dixieland Band for $180,000 to Halvorson Bloodstock from the consignment of Lane’s End, agent at the 1994 Keeneland November sale.

Prior to the pass through the auction ring, Perfect Soul produced two foals, Always Manila and Band Chairman, for W.S. Kilroy.

Dimontina was the first foal out of Ball Chairman bred by Fipke. The daughter of Dixieland Band ended her career in 2000 with three wins from 25 career starts, including a second-place finish in the George C. Hendrie Handicap (Can-IIIT). Dimontina produced her first foal, a Maria’s Mon filly, for Fipke in Ontario this year.

Ball Chairman has produced three full siblings to Perfect Soul, including Not Impossible, who stands as the property of Fipke at Anson Stud in Ontario for a private fee, 3-year-old Excellent Cut, who finished sixth in a June 15 maiden special weight contest at Woodbine, and a yearling filly, Sheba Gold.

Sadler’s Wells is the sire of Perfect Soul and 218 other added-money winners, including additional 2003 stakes winners Black Sam Bellamy (Ire-I), Yesterday (Ire-I), Refuse To Bend (Eng-I), Carib Lady (gr. IIIT), Morozov (Fr-III), Nysaean (Ire-III), Bouthan, Doyen, Visions of Clarity (all in France), Sagittarius (in Norway), Crimphill, Humilis (both in Ireland), Trebizond (NSA-I), and Covent Garden (steeplechase in England). Sadler’s Wells stands at Coolmore in Ireland.—L.D.
