It’s been four years since trainer Vladimir Cerin sent out a winner in the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I)—Early Pioneer won the race in 2000—but the trainer looks to have a tough horse to beat in Even the Score, who increased his worth following a two-length win in the May 8 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap (gr. II) at Hollywood Park.
Making his second start in California, Even the Score rallied from fourth to overtake Ender’s Shadow in the stretch. Total Impact was three lengths back for third. Even the Score completed the 11/16-mile distance in 1:40.81.
Cerin conditions the son of Unbridled’s Song for Ro Parra, who privately purchased Even the Score last year from Thomas Vanderhyde and transferred him from the barn of Kentucky-based trainer Dallas Stewart.
Even the Score joins Cielo Girl and Warleigh as 2004 stakes winners campaigned by Parra. Steve Asmussen conditions both Cielo Girl and Warleigh.
Aspiration Stable bred Even the Score in Kentucky from the stakes- winning Rahy mare Ashtabula. Even the Score originally sold for $285,000 to Ron McDonald at the 1998 Keeneland November mixed sale from the consignment of Vinery, agent. Eaton Sales consigned the colt to the 1999 Keeneland July yearling sale where he failed to meet his reserve and was bought back for $475,000.
Most recently Ashtabula sold in foal to Smart Strike for $275,000 to Terry Morris from the consignment of Vinery, agent, at the 1998 Keeneland November mixed sale.
Even the Score is the first foal and the second of racing age out of Ashtabula. Her other foal on the track is 5-year-old Smart Choice (by Smart Strike), who is owned by Kinghaven Farms and trained by Roger Attfield.
Ashtabula has a 2-year-old Cat Thief colt and foaled a Machiavellian filly last year. Both were foaled under the name GM Thoroughbreds.
Unbridled’s Song is the sire of 29 added-money winners, including additional 2004 stakes winners Domestic Dispute (gr. II), Last Song (gr. II), and Brand Name. Unbridled’s Song stands at the Taylor family’s Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky. His 2004 fee is $125,000.—L.D.
