Earning his eighth win in 11 career starts, Broken Vow also has captured two consecutive stakes by winning the R.R.M. Carpenter Jr. Memorial Stakes by a length. The Pin Oak Stable’s homebred also claimed last month’s Skip Away Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Conditioned by Graham Motion, the 4-year-old colt by Unbridled stalked the slow pace of Jarf. Then in the stretch, Broken Vow overtook Jarf to cross the wire just a length in front. Broken Vow earned his fourth career stakes win.

Broken Vow bested three rivals that included Pat Day-ridden Connected and Cat’s At Home, ridden by Jerry Bailey.

Broken Vow’s dam, Wedding Vow, is a full sister to graded stakes winner Winged Victory. Also bred by Josephine Abercrombie’s Pin Oak, Wedding Vow earned more than $22,000 during her career. As a broodmare, she has produced seven foals. Her four starters were all winners, including stakes winner Threshold. In 2001, she produced a filly by Coronado’s Quest named Love Or Money.

Broken Vow is by Unbridled, champion 3-year-old-male and winner of the 1990 Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Unbridled has sired 21 stakes winners, including champions Banshee Breeze and Anees. Broken Vow is his only stakes winner for 2001. Unbridled stands at the Hancock family’s Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky., where his 2001 fee was $200,000.—M.V.
