Judging from what he’s accomplished this year at Fair Grounds, it looks like Include has completely recovered from a pulled muscle suffered in the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. III) last September. In his first two starts since the race, Include won the Feb. 11 Whirlaway Handicap and the New Orleans Handicap (gr. II) three weeks later.

“He is a special horse, and he proved that today,” said trainer Grover (Bud) Delp, who trains the colt for breeder-owner Robert Meyerhoff. “I liked his race, and hopefully we’ll move forward from here. He’s had two races close together so he’ll need a little rest, and when he tells me, we’ll move forward. He’s nominated to the Oaklawn Handicap (gr. I) and the Pimlico Special (gr. I), so we’ll put our heads together and see where we go from here.”

The 11/8-mile Oaklawn Handicap is scheduled for April 7 and the 13/16-mile Pimlico Special is for May 12.

Six years ago, Meyerhoff won the 1995 New Orleans Handicap (gr. III) with homebred Concern, who later finished third in that year’s Oaklawn Handicap and Pimlico Special. Concern, who had won the previous year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I), and Include are by Broad Brush. Broad Brush earned $2.6 million as a Meyerhoff homebred.

Meyerhoff, who owns Fitzhugh Farm near Cockeysville, Md., still owns Concern’s dam, Fara’s Team. A grade I winner, Fara’s Team is carrying a full sibling to Concern and is due in April. She is booked to Fusaichi Pegasus. Include’s dam, Illeria, produced a Coronado’s Quest filly the night of this year’s New Orleans Handicap. Illeria is booked to Broad Brush. Meyerhoff’s broodmare band also includes Fabulous Broad, who was one of Meyerhoff’s homebred stakes winners of 2000. Fabulous Broad is booked to Dixie Union.

Broad Brush has sired 69 stakes winners, including additional 2001 added-money winners Nobo True (Jpn-I), Pompeii (gr. III), and District. Syndicated Broad Brush stands at Graham J. Beck’s Gainesway Farm near Lexington.—D.S.
