Yes It’s True, he is still undefeated and at age two, has two stakes wins to his credit, both in record time. On May 25, the colt added the Kentucky Breeders’ Cup Stakes to his growing resume. Yes It’s True won the WHAS-11 Stakes in his last outing on May 2, and in his initial start took a maiden race at Keeneland by five lengths.

Yes It’s True races for Satish Sanan’s Padua Stables, who paid $800,000 for the Is It True colt at the Barretts March 2-year-old sale earlier this year. Jerry Bailey Sales Agency consigned the colt on behalf of Bailey-Ellenberg Select.

George Waggoner Stables bred Yes It’s True in Kentucky and originally entered the colt in the 1997 Keeneland January mixed sale as a newly-turned yearling through Eaton Sales, but withdrew him before he reached the ring. Eight months later, Eaton again took the colt to Keeneland for the September yearling sale where B. T. A. Stables purchased him for $220,000.

Waggoner owns Waggoner Farm near Lexington, where he keeps about 22 mares. One of them is Clever Monique, the dam of Yes It’s True. Waggoner purchased the mare in 1995 at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale for $16,000 from Walmac International. She was carrying Yes It’s True at the time. Waggoner had already tried unsuccessfully to purchase the mare privately from the farm which is owned by John T. L. Jones Jr. “I was just lucky enough that he did put her in a sale,” Waggoner said. “I was trying to buy her for three or four years. She’s turned out to be much more than I ever expected her to be.”

Clever Monique also brought a high price at age two. She was purchased by Joe Allbritton’s Lazy Lane Farm for $210,000 from The Kindergarten at the 1990 Barretts sale and was expected to be a very fast horse, until she was injured in her first start. Yes It’s True was the first foal she produced for Waggoner. She has two Skywalker colts at the farm, one at her side and one that is a yearling slated for sale in September at Keeneland. Clever Monique is again in foal to Is It True.

Waggoner also bred Hot Wells, a horse that jumped from the claiming ranks to win the Southwest Stakes (gr. III) earlier this year. Hot Wells finished fourth in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) in his last start. His dam, Rekindling, died last year, but Waggoner has a 2-year-old colt by Phone Trick and a yearling colt by Personal Hope produced from the mare.

Is It True has sired five stakes winners including Yes It’s True. The stallion is owned by a partnership and stands at John T. L. Jones Jr.’s Walmac International near Lexington for a $3,500 fee.—K. J. I.
