Pressed by O’Rey Fantasma and Wordly Manner early in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship (gr. III), favored Yes It’s True inched away from his rivals in the turn, then pulled away for a six-length victory on July 19. The win was the fourth in five career races for Yes It’s True, who suffered his only defeat in the June 27 Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs. He finished second in that race, beaten 13/4 lengths by a stablemate, Time Bandit.
Yes It’s True began his career in April at Keeneland, winning a 41/2-furlong maiden event by five lengths. Between that race and the Bashford Manor, he scored victories in the WHAS-11 and Kentucky Breeders’ Cup Stakes at Churchill.
The Hollywood Juvenile winner was bred in Kentucky by George Waggoner Stables. George Waggoner owns Waggoner Farm near Lexington, where he keeps Yes It’s True’s dam, Clever Monique, and approximately 21 other mares. Waggoner purchased Clever Monique, carrying Yes It’s True, for $16,000 at the 1995 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. She was consigned to the auction by Walmac International.
Yes It’s True was entered by Waggoner, through Eaton Sales, to the 1997 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, but the colt was scratched. Consigned by Eaton later that year to the Keeneland September yearling sale, Yes It’s True was sold to B. T. A. Stable for $220,000. In March of this year, Yes It’s True was offered by Jerry Bailey Sales Agency, on behalf of Bailey-Ellenberg Select, at the Barretts select sale of 2-year-olds in training. The colt was purchased by Satish Sanan’s Padua Stables for $800,000, the sale’s third-highest price.
Is It True is the sire of Yes It’s True and four other added-money winners. Winner of the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I), Is It True is owned by a partnership, and he stands at John T. L. Jones Jr.’s Walmac International near Lexington. The stallion’s 1998 stud fee was $3,500 live foal.—D. B. B.
