During the post position draw for the Aug. 5 running of the $1-million Haskell Invitational (gr. 1), Steve Asmussen was asked if Curlin was the best horse he has ever trained. A master of understatement, Asmussen flatly replied: "I think that would be very reasonable."
Thursday, August 02, 2007Teuflesberg rebounds from a 17th place finish in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) to rally from last to win the Woody Stephens (gr. II).
Saturday, June 09, 2007Hall of Famer Woody Stephens trained five consecutive winners of the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes (gr. I) in the 1980s. So why is there a race named for him on Belmont Stakes day run at seven furlongs? We'll probably never know for sure, but the one thing that seems certain is that Deadly Dealer, the 5-2 favorite in the $250,000 Woody Stephens Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-olds, should prove tough to beat.
Thursday, June 07, 2007Ever So Pretty, a 2-year-old full sister to Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) winner Stormello, made her racing debut a winning one June 2 at Hollywood Park. Under jockey Mike Smith, Ever So Pretty jumped out to an early lead in the five-furlong maiden race, led at one point by 3 1/2 lengths, and held off a closing Tasha's Miracle to score by a neck.
Sunday, June 03, 2007The post position draw is history, and it is time for racing's greatest minds to start planning strategy. Will there be a fast pace or a slow pace? Do you send or take back and see what others do? Will the outside horses break sharply and try to get to the inside or take back and hope to get lucky to find the holes? The wheels are turning.

Wednesday, May 02, 2007Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Tiago and Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) victor Stormello gave their connections encouragement for an anticipated date in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) May 5 with strong works at Hollywood Park Sunday.
Sunday, April 29, 2007If you've forgotten about Stormello after his fourth-place finish in the Florida Derby (gr. I), be prepared to see a new version of the old speed horse when the colt breaks from the gate in the May 5 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
Thursday, April 12, 2007Favored Scat Daddy put away his rival Stormello soon after they reached the stretch and finished strongly to hold off the grinding Notional, capturing the $1 million Florida Derby (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park in an impressive effort Saturday.
Tuesday, April 03, 2007Well, we've got our first big horse heading to Churchill Downs following Scat Daddy's victory in the Florida Derby (gr. I), and judging from the other cards trainer Todd Pletcher is holding, he's going to have a full house come May 5. But who knows if runner-up Notional will be the first of four aces held by Doug O'Neill.

Wednesday, March 28, 2007There is no escaping the fact that Hard Spun proved he is a brilliant, classy horse with his bounce back performance in the Lane's End Stakes (gr. Tuesday, March 06, 2007Scat Daddy, somewhat overlooked in trainer Todd Pletcher's rich stable for this year's Triple Crown trail, stormed from far back to tag the tough-luck loser Stormello by a nose in the final stride of Saturday's $350,000 Fountain of Youth (gr. II) for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream Park.
