St Nicholas Abbey has reached a "critical" point in his recovery from laminitis, Coolmore Stud reported Nov. 28.
Outstanding females provided many of the thrills during the Breeder's Cup's third decade.
Coolmore Stud's St Nicholas Abbey has been dealt a setback in his recovery from an injury sustained in July as the 6-year-old horse has "developed mild laminitic changes in the left fore," according to a Twitter post.
While his riding career was winding down by the time the Breeders' Cup launched in 1984, jockey Bill Shoemaker still managed to stamp the event when he delivered a perfectly timed ride aboard Ferdinand in the 1987 Classic.
Ireland's Coolmore Stud reported Sept. 30 that injured equine superstar St Nicholas Abbey's recovery is on track and that "surgeons at Fethard Equine Hospital couldn't be happier with St Nicholas Abbey's progress to date."

Multiple grade I winner St Nicholas Abbey "continues to progress along the right lines" after undergoing two major operations, owner Coolmore Stud said in an Aug. 1 update.
St Nicholas Abbey has made progress and was in good form July 27 following emergency colic surgery. The 6-year-old Montjeu horse had surgery July 24 for a fractured pastern and colicked two days later.
St Nicholas Abbey underwent emergency surgery for colic the morning of July 26, and his prognosis is "very guarded," owner Coolmore said.
St Nicholas Abbey, who suffered a fractured pastern during a routine work July 23 and underwent surgery the following day, is recuperating in the intensive care unit at Fethard Equine Hospital in England.
International superstar St Nicholas Abbey sustained a career-ending injury the morning of July 23 at trainer Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle headquarters and efforts were being made by veterinarians to save the horse for stud.
