It's unusual when a turf horse gets recognition beyond his favorite surface, so for Wise Dan to be voted champion turf male of 2012, champion older male, and Horse of the Year shows how dominating he is.

Here's a look at where Horses of the Year earned their first victories.
It's hard to believe 40 years have passed since the winter of 1973. Racing's two hubs as usual were Hialeah and Gulfstream in Florida and Santa Anita in California.

Tony Leonard, a legendary equine photographer who chronicled the golden age of Thoroughbred racing, died July 14 at Homestead Nursing Home in Lexington. He was 89.

So, after nearly 40 years, the Maryland Jockey Club, following two hours of testimony and forensic analyses, finally has awarded the Preakness stakes record to Secretariat.
After investigating the timing of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat's Preakness Stakes, the Maryland Racing Commission voted unanimously to change the official time from 1:54 2/5 to 1:53, a stakes record.
