Unraced since her fourth-place finish in the Emirates Airlines Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (gr. IT), Eclipse Award finalist Nashoba's Key will make her 5-year-old debut in the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Stakes at Santa Anita Jan. 26.
She was second in her last start, the Aug. 23 Baslton Spa Handicap (gr. IIT) at Saratoga, but Vacare would not be denied victory Oct. 6, when she wore down Precious Kitten in the $400,000 First Lady Stakes (gr. IIT) at Keeneland.
Mauralakana collared even-money favorite Quite a Bride a furlong from home and drew clear in the final stages to win the $162,900 Locust Grove Handicap (gr. IIIT) for fillies and mares, bringing down the curtain on the 2007 Churchill Downs spring meet Sunday.
Trainer Bill Mott, the all-time leader in victories and stakes wins at Churchill Downs, hopes to wrap up the Louisville track's spring meet on Sunday by adding a victory in each column when he saddles favored Quite a Bride in a field of six older fillies and mares in Sunday's $150,000-added Locust Grove Handicap (gr. Eurowest Bloodstock's Take The Ribbon got up in the final lunge for jockey Rafael Bejarano to nose Quite a Bride in the $166,350 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (gr. IIIT) Saturday.
Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey's homebred Precious Kitten, racing for the first time for trainer Bobby Frankel, took command of Saturday's $170,550 Mrs. Revere Stakes (gr. IIT) mid-stretch, then was all out to hold off the streaking J'ray for a neck victory on the Churchill Downs turf.
A talented field of 11 sophomore fillies, led by Quite a Bride and Brownie Points, are set to go postward in the $150,000 Ms. Revere Stakes (gr. IIT) Nov. 18 at Churchill Downs.
Haras Santa Maria de Araras' Quite a Bride was put on the lead by jockey Cornelio Velasquez and kept going for a two-length victory in the 14th renewal of the Pebbles Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at a mile over Belmont Park's Widener Turf Course on Monday's Columbus Day card.
