Zayat Stables' Nehro, a dull sixth in the Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) in his last start, exited the race with an ankle chip and will miss about three months of training, the Zayat family said June 24.

The 31st running of the 1 1/8-mile event sets up as a faceoff between two of the country's top older horses--Pin Oak Stable's Alternation and Morton Fink's Wise Dan.
Ahmed Zayat has come close repeatedly in racing's 3-year-old classics, including with Bodemeister in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. He hopes Paynter can put him over the top in the Belmont Stakes.
Pin Oak Stable's Alternation grabbed the lead inside the eighth pole and held off the late charge of Nehro to win the May 18 Pimlico Special (gr. III) by a nose. The son of Distorted Humor covered 1 3/16 miles in 1:57.60.
The Pimlico Special (gr. III), returning to the Pimlico racing calendar after a three-year hiatus, has drawn a sold field of 10 handicap horses, headed by Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II) winner Alternation.
So, after three second-place finishes in the Derby, each one more agonizing than the one before, Zayat may now turn his attention to the black-eyed susans, hoping they smell sweeter than the roses. read blog
