Pair of Locals Face Off Again in Red Bank

Pair of Locals Face Off Again in Red Bank

The final graded event of Monmouth's 2009 season, the $175,000 Red Bank Stakes (gr. IIIT) on Sept. 6, has come up very solid. The one-mile test on turf drew a field of 11, including some local heroes and talented shippers, and that's only fitting since it caps a season of competitive stakes racing on the Jersey Shore.

Get Serious All Business in Oceanport

Heavy rain at Monmouth Park Aug. 2 took the $200,000 Oceanport Stakes off the turf and left only three starters to contest the 1 1/16-mile event on the slop. When it was over, 5-year-old gelding Get Serious earned his first graded stakes victory by holding off Kiss the Kid by a neck.

English Channel Looks to Get Back in Winner's Circle

One month from now, English Channel's connections will be taking dead aim at the elusive $3-million John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) for a third time. But first, owner James Scatuorchio and trainer Todd Pletcher have to get the 5-year-old son of Smart Strike back on the winning track, as they must tackle six challengers in the one-mile Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational (gr. IT) at Belmont Park Sept. 30.

Giant Wrecker Crashes Canadian Turf Party

Pacemaker Giant Wrecker stubbornly refused to give way in the lane under Javier Castellano to win the $100,000 Canadian Turf Handicap (gr. IIIT) by a head over the relentless closer Host on the Gulfstream Park grass course Saturday. Miesque's Approval, the 2006 Eclipse Award winner as the nation's top turf runner, never fired and finished fifth as the 4-5 favorite.
