The Texas Thoroughbred Association announced its 2016 Texas Champions Jan. 19, and the appropriately named Texas Chrome will be honored as the Texas Horse of the Year.
In the 24th start of his career, Lewis E. Mathews Jr.'s Ivan Fallunovalot collected his first graded stakes triumph and stretched his current win streak to four straight with a 4 1/2 length win in the Frank J. De Francis Dash (gr. III).
The TTA's human awards weren't announced in advance, and the top honor, the T.I. "Pops" Harkins Award for lifetime achievement, went to William S. Farish III.
As strange as it might seem, when many of the fastest horses in the world meet every year in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I), the quickest horses out of the gate mostly don't win.
Valid Expectations, Texas' all-time leading stallion, has died at the age of 22. The son of Valid Appeal was retired from stud duty at William S. Farish's Lane's End Texas in 2013 and had been pensioned in Kentucky.
In the $300,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (gr. III) at Oaklawn Park April 9, Alsvid recovered from a stumble at the start to catch Ivan Fallunovalot in the stretch and win by three-quarters of a length.
Multiple stakes winner Ivan Fallunovalot, who has won or placed in 12 of 16 starts, tops the eight-horse field of older horses entered in the $300,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (gr. III) April 9 at Oaklawn Park.
