Gov. Ernie Fletcher appointed Lisa Underwood as executive director of the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority (KHRA). Underwood succeeds Jim Gallagher, who stepped down Oct. 1 after directing the agency for two years.

Hours after a federal judge Thursday ruled in favor of five jockeys being allowed to wear advertising in Saturday's Kentucky Derby (gr. I), the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority suspended its rule barring commercial logos, thus allowing all jockeys in Kentucky to wear advertising.

Valenzuela Gets Stay of Suspension; To Resume Riding April 25

Having been persuaded by information and testimony that the most recent troubles of jockey Patrick Valenzuela were due to clinical depression, not substance abuse, and that Valenzuela's depression is being successfully treated, the chairman of the California Horse Racing Board Friday issued a temporary stay of Valenzuela's suspension until an appeal of the decision by Santa Anita Park stewards to suspend him through December 31 is completed.
