When Citronnade makes an easy lead she's nearly impossible to catch, as she demonstrated for her rivals in the $150,000 Dahlia Handicap (gr. IIT) for fillies and mares on the Hollywood Park turf course Dec. 16.
Led by standout fillies Nashoba's Key and Citronnade, the line-up for $150,000 Dahlia Handicap (gr. IIT) on the Hollywood Park turf Dec. 16 appears especially tough. The question is whether the leading contenders will run.
She's the queen of the California breds. Nashoba's Key takes an unblemished record into the Breeders' Cup next month after she turned back odds-on choice Citronnade in the $400,000 Yellow Ribbon (gr. IT) on the turf during the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita Sept. 29.
Trainer Carla Gaines knew from the beginning that she had an extremely talented filly in Warren Williamson's homebred Nashoba's Key, unbeaten in six starts. But even she admits she's a little surprised at the filly's rapid rise in the distaff ranks.
Coming into the $750,000 Beverly D. (gr. IT), all the talk was about Citronnade and Lady of Venice, two talented American fillies who were undefeated this year. But when the field of seven reached the Arlington Park stretch Aug. 11, a European mare with only one win in the past two years stole the show.
In winning the $150,000 Beverly Hills Handicap (gr. IIT) July 1, Citronnade barely broke a sweat. On Aug. 11, trainer Bobby Frankel will find out if his superb 4-year-old filly will finally be challenged, as she headlines the field of seven in the $750,000 Beverly D. (gr. IT) for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up on the turf at Arlington Park.
If there was any hope for Citronnade's four opponents in $150,000 Beverly Hills Handicap (gr. IIT) on the turf at Hollywood Park, it was that the Bobby Frankel trained filly had never run as far as Sunday's 1 1/4-mile distance. It hardly mattered when the smooth striding bay dominated every step of the way to win by 2 1/2 lengths.
Trainer Bobby Frankel has entered a formidable duo of Citronnade and Naughty Rafaela in Sunday's $150,000 Beverly Hills Handicap (gr. IIT) for fillies and mares over 10 furlongs on the Lakeside Turf Course at Hollywood Park.

Trainer Bobby Frankel will saddle the highly-regarded duet of Citronnade and Price Tag as he aims to add to his record six wins in the $300,000 Gamely Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. IT) on turf Monday at Hollywood Park.
Bobby Frankel, who recently became the all-time leading trainer at Santa Anita, gained his seventh Santa Ana Handicap (gr. IIT) victory in 16 years on Sunday when Stronach Stables' Citronnade roared to a stakes record 5 1/4-length victory in the $150,000 event for jockey David Flores.
Jockey David Flores has 10 stakes wins at the 2006-07 Santa Anita meet, mostly teaming with trainer Bobby Frankel, who has has nine. On Sunday, they will try to add to those numbers when Flores rides Stronach Stables' Citronnade for Frankel in the Santa Ana Handicap (gr. IIT) for older fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf.
Stronach Stables' homebred Citronnade was left alone on an easy lead and spurted away from her rivals in the stretch to win the $150,000 San Gorgonio Handicap (gr. IIT) for fillies and mares by three lengths Sunday on the Santa Anita Park turf course.
Grande Melody, winner of last month's Dahlia Handicap (gr. IIT) at Hollywood Park, could give leading 2006 North American jockey Julien Leparoux his first stakes victory at Santa Anita in the $150,000 San Gorgonio Handicap (gr. IIT) on the turf Sunday.
Only five sophomore fillies--plus one entered for main track only--passed the entry box for Friday's Lake Placid Stakes (gr. IIT) at Saratoga, but boy, oh boy, what a crew.
