Odds-on choice El Gato Malo, left, fell from the ranks of the unbeaten when Colonel John, right, held the closer off in the final furlong to win the $200,000 Sham Stakes (gr. III) at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Colonel John had a dream run on the outside of pacesetter Victory Pete, taking command leaving the three-sixteenths pole and winning the nine-furlong test for 3-year-olds under strong urging as El Gato Malo closed.
Owned and bred by Cloverleaf Farm II, Bshapsonata scored her second straight graded stakes, as she entered off a nose victory in the Feb. 9 Forward Gal (gr. II) at Gulfstream.
Out of the Affirmed mare Apasionata Sonata, Bsharpsonata is undefeated in three starts as a sophomore. The versatile bay filly has also won twice on turf, including a 1 ½-length victory Jan. 1 in the Tropical Park Oaks at Calder Race Course.
Malibu Moonshine took advantage of a hot early pace set by 2-5 favorite Daaher, rallying down the stretch to score a major upset in the $80,200 Stymie Handicap March 1 at Aqueduct.
You could take nothing away from the top three finishers in the $350,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. II), but Turtle Bird Stable’s Sir Whimsey, center, got the job done and drew away in the final furlongs to win by a half-length.
