The countdown to the upcoming 31st Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park intensified Oct. 18 with a bevy of workers out at the Southern California track on a pleasant, sun-kissed morning.
With the once-powerful older horse division now all but depleted, the spotlight in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) shines on the 3-year-olds, who should be as dominant at the mutuel windows as they look to be on the track.
Under regular rider Victor Espinoza, California Chrome worked five furlongs at his Los Alamitos base the morning of Oct. 11 in :59 3/5 in preparation for the upcoming Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I).
Trainer David Hofmans, who saddled 36-1 shot Desert Code to win the inaugural Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT), hopes to add to the success of California-based horses in the race with Home Run Kitten.
