Winning the Derby immediately marks a colt as a potential stallion prospect. Breeding success does not always follow, however, and the commercial market has been hard on Derby winners in recent years.
Defending Horse of the Year Wise Dan will likely target the Firecracker Handicap at Churchill, trainer Charlie LoPresti said May 23. His half brother, Successful Dan, is on track for the June 15 Stephen Foster there.

Black Caviar raced from ages 2 to 6 with 25 starts, and was never beaten. She's just been retired, and thoughts now turn to which stallion her owners will send her to in the upcoming breeding season.
John Gunther's Last Gunfighter, who has won five in a row since his maiden victory last October, will invade Maryland and face mostly locally based horses in the $300,000 Pimlico Special (gr. III) May 1.
