The Louisiana State Racing Commission has concluded that no further action is needed in the case involving the former grade I winner Monzante who broke down and was euthanized following a race at Evangeline Downs July 20.
Monzante, a grade I stakes winner competing for a $4,000 tag at Evangeline Downs in Louisiana. He was injured in the race, and upon the advice of the owner's veterinarian, was euthanized.
Jackie Thacker, the trainer that opted to euthanize grade I winner Monzante, said he made the call when it was apparent the gelding was suffering after a breakdown in a July 20 claiming race at Evangeline Downs.
The executive director of the Louisiana State Racing Commission said state veterinarians who examined Monzante following his breakdown in a July 20 race at Evangeline Downs determined the gelding was salvageable.
