Gulfstream Park and Fasig-Tipton have announced a $1 million bonus to the owner of the 2016 Florida Derby (gr. I) winner if that horse is a graduate of this year's 2015 Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-year-olds in training sale.
Gulfstream had all-sources pari-mutuel handle of $20,583,598 for its 12-race Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) card Feb. 21, its second-best wagering total on a non-Florida Derby (gr. I) day since it opened its new facility.
A bumped start barely fazed heavily-favored Khozan in his second straight romp at Gulfstream Park Feb. 22. The $1 million purchase by Al Shaqab Racing impressed again with a 12 3/4-length win.
A Thoroughbred owner for nearly 50 years, Ralph Evans has attended just one edition of the Kentucky Derby (gr. I)--the 1979 renewal. Upstart could take him back with a runner and is looking to continue on the path Feb. 21.
