As unlikely as it seems, a couple of grizzled bantamweights from Northern California are playing the heavyweights as their respective 3-year-olds approach the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 1.
Art Sherman, who trains Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner California Chrome, and others were honored by the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters Association the evening of Oct. 29.

The California Chrome camp appears very confident heading into the Nov. 1 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) despite the 3-year-old colt's disappointing trip in the Sept. 20 Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II).
It is time for the questions to be answered, as 14 horses, seven of them 3-year-olds, will contest the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 1 at Santa Anita Park, with Horse of the Year up for grabs.

The racing career of California Chrome would come to an end with a poor performance in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 1, one of his owners said in a published report.
The Breeders' Cup unveiled its pre-entrants for the 31st World Championships the morning of Oct. 22 at Santa Anita Park, with 201 horses named for the 13-race festival Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
