Special horses that deserved special issues
Dams of Derby winners rarely come on the market, let alone a mare who has produced one who also scored in the Irish equivalent, so Harzand's dam Hazariya was always going to sell for a premium when offered in the Tattersalls December Mares Sale.
John Shirreffs has enjoyed Breeders' Cup glory at Santa Anita Park with the legendary Zenyatta as well as with Life Is Sweet, but Gormley would represent his first Juvenile winner at World Championships.
De Coronado, a 3-year-old full brother of superstar mare Zenyatta, drastically cut back in distance and broke his maiden Aug. 14 at Dundalk in Ireland.

Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra will all but hold hands on Friday as they strut into the National Museum of Racing side by side and take their place among the immortals in the Hall of Fame.
The two champions were head-and-head from the five-sixteenths pole July 30 in the Clement L. Hirsch (gr. I) at Del Mar, but Stellar Wind outdueled her rival to the wire to win by a half-length, ending an eight-race win streak for Beholder.
Stellar Wind's connections are trying three-time champion Beholder again, after a non-threatening second-place run in the Vanity Mile (gr. I) last time out.
Stellar Wind, champion 3-year-old filly of 2015, worked six furlongs in company under Victor Espinoza July 10 at Santa Anita Park in 1:14 1/5 in preparation for a rematch with Beholder in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (gr. I) at Del Mar July 30.
It is the latest in a series of five bottles depicting Breeders' Cup winners, and each bottle is available for a $400 donation to benefit Old Friends, the Thoroughbred retirement farm.
Wanting an easy half-mile breeze from Beholder in her first timed work since a victory in the Vanity Mile (gr. I), the final two clicks on Richard Mandella's stopwatch showed :35 and change for three furlongs and :47 and change for the half.
Two horses and seven people were inducted May 24 into the Arcadia Historical Society Thoroughbred Racing Walk of Champions.
Wright won each Triple Crown race in separate years, and rose to prominence by number of wins and earnings quickly in his career. Tom Ochiltree also put together an excellent career early, winning the Preakness in his second start.
Jerry and Ann Moss' Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year, was bred to Medaglia d'Oro the morning of May 2, according to Zenyatta.com, the mare's official website.

Steve Asmussen and Rachel Alexandra, the great mare he trained to Horse of the Year honors, as well as Horse of the Year Zenyatta and jockey Ramon Dominguez have been selected for induction this year into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame.
Zenyatta's colt by War Front, born April 10, died April 13 due to meconium aspiration syndrome.
Jerry and Ann Moss' Zenyatta, 2010 Horse of the Year, foaled a colt by Central Kentucky sire War Front April 10 at William S. Farish's Lane's End, Team Zenyatta announced.
Del Mar's summer meet, highlighted by the Pacific Classic (gr. I) and several other Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" races, will have projected purses of $525,000 per day.
Seemingly nothing went right for Jerry and Ann Moss' Ziconic in the second start of his career March 25 at Santa Anita Park.
The finalists are jockeys Ramon Dominguez, Victor Espinoza, Garrett Gomez, and Craig Perret; Thoroughbreds English Channel, Kona Gold, Rachel Alexandra, and Zenyatta; and trainers Steve Asmussen and David Whiteley.
Steve Willard, who as part of Team Zenyatta earned the 2010 Special Eclipse Award, died the night of Feb. 16.

After a four-furlong breeze from the gate in :49 3/5 at Santa Anita Park Feb. 13, trainer John Shirreffs said Jerry and Ann Moss' homebred Ziconic will likely make his debut at Santa Anita Park Feb. 20.
Racing Hall of Famer Lava Man and future Hall of Famer Zenyatta will be added to the Arcadia Historical Society's Thoroughbred Racing Walk of Champions in a ceremony Tuesday, May 24.
