It's hard to believe that we're already so far down the Kentucky Derby Trail that the final prep for the Grade I Wood Memorial is on Saturday.
Heavy favorite will have to overcome the far outside post in his 3-year-old debut.
Hansen, last year's champion 2-year-old male and Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner, has been retired from racing due to a tendon injury.
The Pimlico Special (gr. III), returning to the Pimlico racing calendar after a three-year hiatus, has drawn a sold field of 10 handicap horses, headed by Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II) winner Alternation.
Alternation shocked a strong field in the $400,000 Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II) April 14 at Oaklawn Park, leading all the way for his third consecutive stakes win of the meet.
Champion Hansen, the 6-5 favorite for the April 14 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I), was schooled in the gate at Keeneland on the morning of April 13 and then jogged over the Polytrack surface at the Lexington track.
Recent grade I winners Hymn Book and Ron the Greek head a strong field of eight for the $400,000 Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II) April 14.
PORTER ON PEDIGREES, by Alan Porter
Looking to the future, the most interesting questions about Hansen's pedigree are his ability to stay the Kentucky Derby trip and his future prospects as a sire.

Juvenile champion Hansen, a leading contender for the 2012 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) following his smashing win in the Gotham Stakes (gr. III), is expected to return to Aqueduct for the Wood Memorial.
The champion son of Tapit relaxed in the early going before using his brilliant speed en route to a convincing three-length victory in the $400,000 Gotham (gr. III) March 3 at Aqueduct.

The Gotham Stakes is one of those races that could end up exactly like you thought it wouldn't -- so maybe it will.
With the exception of Eclipse Award winner Hansen, a large but rather unaccomplished field of 13 has lined up for the $400,000 Gotham (gr. III) March 3 at Aqueduct.
