Redoute's Choice Colt Shines at MM Sale

A Redoute's Choice - Bal Des Sirenes colt was the top seller Jan. 8 during the second session of the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions yearling auction on Australia's Gold Coast. He brought Aust$620,000 (approximately $446,549 in U.S. funds) from trainer Kris Lees, who purchased the colt from Amarina Farm, which was the agent for his Victoria-based breeder, Wood Nook Farm.

An Encosta de Lago colt brought the top price of Aust$2million (approximately $1,429,380 in U.S. funds) during the opening session of the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions yearling sale on Australia's Gold Coast January 7. Trainer Gai Waterhouse purchased the full brother to 2006 Australian champion Racing To Win from Coolmore Stud, agent.

Tattersalls' December Gross Down 51%

Tattersalls' December sale ended quietly in England with a breeding stock session in which a 3-year-old colt, sold as a jumping prospect, topped trade at 65,000 guineas. The other figures for Dec. 4 were 139 horses sold, a gross of 656,650 guineas, an average price of 4,724 guineas, and a median price of 2,800 guineas. During the four-day breeding stock portion of the December auction, the 610 horses that sold grossed 33,355,150 guineas and averaged 54,681 guineas. The median was 12,500 guineas.

OBS Updates August Sale Results

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. (OBS) recently revised the results for the 2008 August yearling sale on its Web site (www.obssales.com) because of new rules governing horse auctions in Florida that took effect in July. Sale companies now are required to disclose any horses that did not change ownership after being reported as sold.

Details of Saratoga Renovation Reported

Fasig-Tipton's renovation and expansion of its Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion in Upstate New York will cost several million dollars, according to a Nov. 14 report in the Albany Business Review. In plans filed with the city of Saratoga Springs, the auction company's officials said they would use bluestone, slate, brick, and historic wood fencing to create a more upscale facility.

Fasig-Tipton has applied for a building permit to expand its sale pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N. Y., according to the company's president, Boyd Browning. Much of the work planned for the Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion, he said, is designed to bring the building "up to date" to comply with the existing codes for handicapped access.

Book 3 of Tattersalls' October yearling sale finished in England Oct. 17 with a 10,389-guinea average price, down 33% from last year, and a 7,000-guinea median price, which represented a 36% decline. The 271 horses that sold (from 414 offered) grossed 2,815,300 guineas.

Kheleyf Colt Shines in Tatts' Book 3

A 72,000-guinea Kheleyf colt was the top lot during the opening session of Book 3 of the Tattersalls October yearling sale in England Oct. 16. Susan Hearn's Mascalls Stud had bought the colt for 10,500 guineas at Tattersalls in February, and he was resold to Italian agent Marco Bozzi.

The Tattersalls' Book 2 October yearling auction's record for the most expensive horse sold was exceeded twice by progeny of Danehill Dancer during a lively closing session Oct. 15 in England. A son of the Coolmore stallion brought 420,000 guineas and a daughter sold for 400,000 guineas.

Marju Colt Stands Out at Tattersalls

A Marju - What a Picture colt topped the second session of Book 2 of Tattersalls October yearling sale in Newmarket, England, Oct. 14, bringing 170,000 guineas from Sheikh Hamdan's racing manager, Angus Gold. Agent Larry Stratton was the immediate underbidder on the colt, which was consigned by Willie Browne's Meadowlands Stud.

Blandford Bloodstock's Tom Goff was the immediate underbidder on the colt, which was consigned through Caroline Green's Templeton Stud to the Book 1 portion of the auction.

The Book 1 portion of Tattersalls' October yearling sale in England saw trade broadly on a par with last year during its first session. With this year's sale reduced from four days to three, Tattersalls did not issue comparative figures, but the 114,227-guinea average price Oct. 7 was down just 1% from the comparable figure on last year's opening day with a larger catalogue. The 80,000-guinea median price fell 7.5% and the 15,078,000-guinea turnover rose 3.5%.
