Steve Haskin's Derby Report (3/4): Lost Weekend

For a weekend in which we had five races of note for 3-year-olds, we learned very little. Three of the five races were run on sloppy or muddy tracks, and in the highlight event, the San Rafael Stakes, we really didn't learn much more about Came Home than we knew before, other than he can now get a mile with no problem.

San Rafael Report: Home Alone

Came Home pressed Werblin through moderate fractions then drew away in the stretch to win the $200,000 San Rafael Stakes (gr. II) by three lengths on Saturday at Santa Anita. Under Chris McCarron, Came Home completed the mile in 1:36.24 on a fast track to notch the victory in his first career attempt at a race run around two turns.

Came Home Heads San Rafael; Looks to Remain on Derby Trail

Although Saturday's San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita has drawn several classy colts, there is a major question whether or not the race will produce any Kentucky Derby contenders. Of the top choices in the one-mile race, only Pelirrojo looks like he wants any part of 1 1/4 miles. The other big names, Came Home, Fonz's, and Werblin, all have either pedigree issues or logistics going against them.

Steve Haskin's Derby Report: Mission Impossible? (2/4/2002)

Your mission, Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to infiltrate Paco Gonzalez' heavily armed fortress and slip Came Home a major dose of stamina builder. As much as we'd love to accomplish that mission and get this talented colt all the way to Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May, we can't help seeing all those sprinters and milers staring out at us from his pedigree

Came Home Impressive in San Vicente Stakes

Came Home drew off through the Santa Anita stretch to win Saturday's $150,000 San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) by four lengths over maiden Jack's Silver. Pacesetter Werblin was nipped at the wire for second-place money, but finished three lengths clear of Popular.

Monthir May be Overlooked in Hutcheson

With the main focus of Saturday's Hutcheson Stakes likely to be on Maybry's Boy and Axis, one horse may very well be overlooked in the wagering. Listed at 9-2 on the Daily Racing Form morning line, is Shadwell Stable's Monthir. Also on Saturday, Popular, Came Home, and Werblin slug it out in the San Vicente Stakes.

Kentucky Derby 2002: Hitting the Trail

As the masses congregate at the start of the Kentucky Derby trail, there will, as usual, be lots of pushing and shoving until late February and early March when the contenders begin to separate themselves from the pack. But disappointment and frustration can be prevelant just getting to the Derby trail, as evidenced by the number of highly promising juveniles who stumbled along the way last week.
