Unbridled: 'A Wonderful Privilege to Be Around'

Dr. Douglar Byars, respected surgeon at the Hagyard-Davidson-McGee equine hospital near Lexington, spoke with The Blood-Horse about the unsuccessful efforts to save Claiborne Farm stallion Unbridled, calling the 1990 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) and Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner "the most extraordinary, patient horse I've ever been around."

Unbridled Euthanized

Major sire Unbridled, who underwent two operations at Hagyard-Davidson-McGee veterinary clinic near Lexington in September, was euthanized Oct. 18 at the clinic after a severe bout of colic.

Unbridled Returns to Claiborne Farm

Unbridled returned to the Hancock family's Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky., at noon today, having been given the go-ahead by veterinarians at Hagyard-Davidson-McGee veterinary clinic. He has made steady progress from two surgeries, the first to remove a mass which proved to be benign, the second to repair a hole at the resection point.

Claiborne Farm stallion Unbridled has made steady progress this week from two surgeries, the first to remove a mass which proved to be benign, the second to repair a hole near the bowel resection point. Claiborne manager Gus Koch said Thursday morning Unbridled "has overcome a lot of problems, is bright, and much stronger."

Unbridled Back to Claiborne

Syndicated Claiborne Farm stallion Unbridled, who was taken to Hagyard-Davidson-McGee veterinary clinic near Lexington on Sept. 3 after suffering a mild case of colic, returned to Claiborne this morning.
