As handicappers look for every possible angle in considering a horse's chances in the Breeders' Cup World Championships, Santa Anita Park security will be monitoring every Breeders' Cup horse from a state-of-the-art surveillance system.
Santa Anita Park June 29 completed the installation of its new turf course, which will be ready for use for the Southern California track's fall meet, which begins Sept. 30.
Del Mar has moved two turf races scheduled for Sunday, July 27 to its main track in light of four breakdowns that have occurred on the course since the meeting began July 17.
Del Mar will begin an expansion of its turf course Sept. 13 to accommodate more horses in an effort to host a future Breeders' Cup World Championships event.
Laurel Park officials decided Nov. 29 not to use the turf course for the remainder of the year. Heavy rains in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. region forced races off the grass four times last week.
With Kentucky's Louisville area in the midst of a severe drought, the turf course at Churchill Downs "is about as firm as it ever gets in the fall," track superintendent Butch Lehr said.
